Danupon Addresses Rumors About Suthin’s Future with Pheu Thai

Bangkok: Danupon Punnakanta, a Pheu Thai Party list MP and spokesperson, addressed rumors concerning Suthin Khlangsaeng’s potential departure from Pheu Thai to form a new political party. He clarified that after checking the news and speaking with Suthin’s son, Rat Khlangsaeng, there is no imminent plan for Suthin to leave the party. Danupon stated he believes that the upcoming party leader election will choose the most suitable candidate for the role.

According to Thai News Agency, Danupon investigated the rumors early in the morning after they emerged, discovering that the notion of forming a new party was a long-standing consideration by Suthin. This idea was intended as a contingency plan to address potential future challenges for Pheu Thai, including leadership voids and the risk of MPs dispersing to other parties. Suthin’s plan involved creating a new party rather than joining another one, and he is currently coordinating closely with Suthin.

Danupon mentioned that while he cannot entirely dismiss the rumors, he intends to confirm the facts by speaking directly with Suthin. For now, the situation remains speculative.

When questioned about whether the Pheu Thai Party’s restructuring might affect member confidence, Danupon explained that the process is only beginning, following the former leader’s resignation and overhaul announcement. He expressed optimism that the party leader, to be elected tomorrow, will gain the confidence of existing members and prepare the party for next year’s election.

Regarding potential surprises in the upcoming party leader selection, Danupon noted that it is a matter of public perspective. He highlighted the diverse insights shared at the recent party meeting, which included contributions from senior figures like Chaturon Chaisang and Prasert Chantarawongthong, along with lesser-known names such as Chulaphan Amornvivat and Sorawong Thienthong. He expects discussions will continue in today’s parliamentary meeting before the session adjourns.

Danupon concluded by stating that the party is on the verge of significant changes, beginning with the election of a new party leader and executive committee. He clarified that the Pheu Thai Party leader does not necessarily need to be a prime ministerial candidate, and further discussions will determine the party’s candidate for that role.
