Bangkok: During the rainy season with heavy rain, the risk of flooding and power outages, including accidents from electrical leakage and electric shock, has increased. With concern for public safety, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has collaborated with the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) to recommend methods for surviving safely during these disasters.
According to Thai News Agency, citizens are advised to keep a close watch on weather forecasts and carry umbrellas and raincoats when leaving home. It is important to avoid venturing outside during heavy rain. In anticipation of flooding, residents should move electrical appliances and belongings to higher ground. Preparing an emergency bag with important documents and personal medication is also recommended for potential evacuations. Government warnings should be heeded, and official evacuation orders must be followed immediately.
Additional precautions are necessary for power outages and electrical hazards. Households should have candles, flashlights, or other lighting devices ready for use during power outages. Individuals are cautioned against using electrical appliances when wet, as it poses a risk of electrocution. In the event of flooding, residents should discontinue the use of electrical outlets and appliances in the affected areas and turn off the circuit breaker for safety. People are advised to avoid wading through water near electric poles and, if necessary, to maintain a distance of 1-1.5 meters, walking slowly. Any sensation of twitching or cramping should prompt a quick retreat in the opposite direction.
Residents of Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan experiencing electrical issues can contact MEA through the MEA Smart Life Application, Line: MEA Connect (@MEAthailand), or by selecting the Contact MEA Call Center Online 1130. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority provides a 24-hour Electricity User Information Service Center. In case of disasters or accidents, the public can report incidents and request assistance from the DDPM via the 1784 safety hotline or through the Line “DDPM receives reports 1784” by adding the Line ID @1784DDPM for 24-hour coordination of assistance.
