Digital literacy activists call for empathy in securing personal data

National Coordinator of the Digital Literacy Activists Network (Japelidi), Novi Kurnia, on Friday invited the public to exercise empathy in the online world and help protect others’ personal data.

This would maximize the protection of digital media security in Indonesia, she said at a webinar on ‘Potential Cyber Crimes against Personal Data and the Importance of Cyber Security in the Digital Era’, held by State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga of Yogyakarta here on Friday.

“It is not enough to know and understand the concept of personal data protection, but we also must have empathy. For example, thinking that if I share other people’s data, it can harm them,” she explained.

According to Kurnia, the effort to build empathy is part of ensuring cyber security competency. It is an effective competence that should be implemented by the people of Indonesia, she said.

Moreover, there is a need to build cognitive competence, which is the ability to know and understand the concepts and mechanisms of personal data protection, she said.

Yet another competence is conative competence that is related to desire and will, which refers to the willingness to get used to ensuring digital security, especially for personal data that is maintained and constantly security-updated, she added.

The three competencies need to be applied thoroughly by every element of Indonesian society as a form of harmonization for digital media security and personal data protection, Kurnia said.

She also spoke about the three aspects of digital media: literacy or education, mentoring, and law enforcement. If these three things can be realized appropriately, optimal digital media security can be achieved, she said.

Kurnia also emphasized that digital media users in Indonesia are not only adults but also children.

Hence, a sense of empathy to supervise, set a good example, and protect personal data is important, she said.

“The adults should be best friends for children who participate in using or becoming digital media content (creators),” she remarked.
