DPR approves Admiral Margono’s appointment as TNI commander

Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Friday approved the appointment of Admiral Yudo Margono as the new commander of the National Armed Forces (TNI).

“Considering the opinion of party factions and individual legislators, DPR Commission I, hereby, approves the appointment of Admiral Yudo Margono as the new TNI commander,” the chairperson of DPR’s Commission I Meutya Hafid said at the Parliament complex here on Friday.

She informed that no voting took place during Commission I’s internal meeting to determine Margono’s appointment as all party factions unanimously endorsed him as the new TNI commander.

The approval was granted after the parliament’s commission scrutinized Margono in a fit and proper test, which lasted three hours, the chairperson said.

“During the in-depth session, (Admiral Margono) answered questions from the nine party factions. (After the fit and proper test), DPR Commission I organized an internal meeting,” Hafid added.

During the internal meeting, the commission also approved the discharge of General Andika Perkasa as TNI commander, she informed. The parliament commended General Perkasa’s performance and dedication to advancing Indonesia’s military during his tenure as commander.

During his fit and proper test, Margono shared his vision of shaping the TNI as a patriotic institution of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. He said that he would continue to develop the TNI to make the Indonesian people and nation respected in the world.

“By making TNI the patriot of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, which encompass professional, modern, and resilient TNI three military branches and soldiers for the integrity of Indonesia,” he said.

To realize his vision, he said he will focus on strengthening the three branches of the military.

He also promised to ensure that military officers remain humane and humble, and do not commit any disgraceful acts, which could damage public trust in the military.

“If I am entrusted to lead the TNI, I will exert my utmost efforts to ensure no TNI officer commits any disgraceful act and (is found) to be arrogant, which can hurt the people,” he said.
