Satun: The elderly in Satun Province have come together to form a long drum circle known as ‘Singwai Udai Pha Phloen’, aimed at bringing joy and entertainment to the community without any charge. The collective age of this group is approximately 3,000 years, highlighting the rich heritage they represent.
According to Thai News Agency, the “Songwai Udai Pha Phloen” Long Drum Group consists of enthusiastic elderly individuals from Udai Charoen Subdistrict in Khuan Kalong District. This group actively participates in numerous local events, including the boat procession, Kathin robe offering ceremony, forest robe offering ceremony, and merit-making ceremonies, all free of charge. If all group members gather, their combined age exceeds 3,000 years.
Mr. Somkid Kongwang, President of the Udai Charoen Subdistrict Administrative Organization, revealed that a school for the elderly has been in operation for around 6-7 generations, accommodating hundreds of seniors over time. The latest generation comprises about 50 p
articipants who engage in activities such as long drum dancing. Supported by a budget from the Satun Provincial Administrative Organization, these activities aim to prevent loneliness among the elderly, significantly enhancing their quality of life. The gatherings foster social interaction, leading to improved physical and mental health, and contribute to their overall happiness.
Mr. Sathien Musikachat, President of the Udaiphaphon Elderly Club, shared that the choice of long drum dance was intentional, allowing participants to stretch and exercise. Despite having only a month of involvement and just five days of practice, the oldest dancer, aged 73, expressed joy in showcasing their talents at no cost. The activity not only strengthens the body but also provides an opportunity for gaining merit through various events.
