Samut songkhram: A 71-year-old man died after crashing his sedan into a trailer truck on Samut Songkhram-Bang Pae Road in Amphoe Amphawa, Samut Songkhram Province. The incident occurred as the trailer truck was making a U-turn, causing a blockage on the road and leading to the fatal accident.
According to Thai News Agency, surveillance footage captured the moment when the trailer truck, carrying piles, attempted a U-turn, obstructing the roadway. The sedan, driven by Mr. Chanpinit Songchai from Bangkok, collided with the trailer’s midsection at high speed. The accident happened at 7:18 p.m. yesterday in front of a cooking gas filling plant in Village No. 9, Bang Chang Subdistrict. Police and rescue workers from Amphawa Police Station responded promptly to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers found Mr. Chanpinit unconscious and restrained by his seatbelt in the driver’s seat. Rescue workers used cutting tools to extricate him from the vehicle, but despite their efforts to perform CPR, Mr. Chanpinit was pronounced dead at the scene. The trailer truck, notably missing a license plate, was parked across the road, further complicating the situation. The trailer’s rear wheels, which included three axles with a total of 12 wheels, were damaged and flat. The truck’s driver, Mr. Thanmani, was present to provide information to the authorities.
The accident led to a significant traffic jam, stretching over 5 kilometers. Police set up traffic cones to redirect vehicles from the accident site to the Amphawa Intersection to alleviate congestion. Initial investigations revealed that Mr. Thanmani was en route to deliver piles when the collision occurred. Preliminary assumptions suggest that factors such as Mr. Chanpinit’s age, possible poor eyesight, lack of familiarity with the road, and the absence of side lights on the trailer might have contributed to the crash. Further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
