Election Commission Confident in Conducting By-Elections Across Three Provinces

Bangkok: The Election Commission Secretary has expressed confidence in holding by-elections in three provinces, despite concerns about low voter turnout due to the shortened parliamentary term.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sawaeng Boonmee, Secretary-General of the Election Commission (EC), discussed the preparations for the by-elections in Chiang Rai, Sisaket, and Kanchanaburi provinces. Mr. Boonmee confirmed that by-elections are underway in these areas, with Chiang Rai scheduled for September 14th. He plans to visit the region to observe the process and reported that the situation remains stable, with no significant disruptions from campaigning or weather conditions.

In Sisaket Province, the by-election is planned for September 28th. Despite its location as a border province, Mr. Boonmee assured that Sisaket is not currently a conflict zone. He noted that artillery fire was previously allowed but that all families have now returned to their homes. Security officials have confirmed the province’s readiness to conduct the election, although Mr. Boonmee voiced concerns about whether the public would participate actively, given the shortened term of parliament.

In Kanchanaburi Province, the Election Commission has already communicated with the Cabinet to propose a royal decree for the election. Mr. Boonmee addressed concerns about potential low voter turnout, explaining that the shortened parliamentary term could affect political parties’ ability to campaign effectively. Despite this, he emphasized the necessity of holding elections in line with the planned four-year parliamentary term.
