Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has announced the suspension of the Sisaket by-election for the Sisaket MP in Constituency 5, citing public safety concerns. Voting will be halted until conditions are deemed safe for the public.
According to Thai News Agency, the ECT clarified that the suspension is not an indefinite postponement, despite some reports suggesting otherwise. The unrest along the Thai-Cambodian border has led to disruptions in the Khun Han and Phusing districts of Sisaket Province, affecting residents’ ability to return to their areas. The ECT emphasized that the election will only proceed once the situation stabilizes and residents can safely return.
The ECT plans to propose a new election date once the unrest subsides, ensuring that the electoral process can be conducted without compromising public safety. The commission seeks to maintain transparency and accuracy in reporting, urging news outlets to avoid misleading headlines regarding the election’s status.
