ERC Orders MEA to Address Bangkok Power Outage

Bangkok: The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has mandated the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) to provide a comprehensive explanation for the power outage in the Pradiphat area within a seven-day timeframe.

According to Thai News Agency, the ERC has instructed the MEA to conduct a thorough technical investigation into the outage that occurred in the Pradipat-Saphan Khwai area. This incident took place between 10:00 PM and 11:30 PM on August 5, 2025, affecting a large number of residents. Dr. Poonpat Leesombatpaiboon, Secretary-General of the ERC and spokesperson for the commission, stated that the MEA must report the findings, along with solutions and a preventive plan, to the ERC within the stipulated period.

A preliminary report from the MEA revealed that the outage was a result of a technical malfunction during scheduled maintenance of the main transmission line, impacting 28,267 electricity consumers. The MEA managed to restore power to the initial location within 27 minutes, achieving full service restoration in 1 hour and 27 minutes, aligning with the system restoration plan’s timeframe.

The MEA is tasked with preparing a detailed report to identify the outage’s cause and propose a preventive strategy to avoid future occurrences. The ERC will utilize the MEA’s findings to assess and potentially enhance regulatory measures to ensure the power system’s security and stability.

Furthermore, the ERC has advised affected electricity users to file complaints directly with the MEA if they suffered property damage, such as damaged appliances, due to the outage. Should the resolution be unsatisfactory, consumers can escalate their complaints to the ERC through various channels, including the LINE Official Account “ERC Receives Problem Reports” (@ERCvoice), regional ERC offices, and the Regional Energy Consumer Committees (RECCs), to ensure fair and prompt compensation.
