Expect students to help develop new digital economy: Minister Hartarto

Students, who are serving as agents of change and empowerment by taking part in the physical as well as the non-physical development of the nation, are expected to promote the new digital economy in Indonesia.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto made the remarks in a written statement issued here on Tuesday.

“We hope that fellow students can take advantage of all the digital infrastructure that has been built and play a role in the digitization process, so that they can develop the new digital economy,” he said.

Students, who belong to a generation that has a high ability to adapt to technology, must cultivate and develop these abilities in order to create jobs and expand the marketing of local products, he added.

“I hope all students can keep up with the times and prepare themselves to face various global changes and challenges, which, in fact, will encourage competition between states,” the minister said.

On its part, the government is implementing a youth entrepreneurship development strategy by making efforts to build competence, facilitating licensing, establishing markets and marketing opportunities, expanding access to and availability of capital through micro-credit and other schemes, as well as carrying out structural reforms to create a conducive business climate.

In addition, the government is providing training under the Pre-Employment Cards and Digital Literacy programs as well as Sea Labs Indonesia, among others.

The government will seek to improve the reach and quality of Internet services by building facilities and infrastructure for boosting digital (5G) connectivity, ranging from BTS towers, fiber optic networks and data centers, and multifunction satellites, to plans for the use of low orbital satellites.

“Moreover, it can be seen that with collective hard work, we have been able to survive well through an unprecedented crisis that has never happened before since independence, which is the COVID-19 pandemic, even with better achievements than other countries in the world,” he added.
