First Place in Marketing Management Case Analysis Competition, REN Team: The Key is Determination, Strive, and Pray

Eunike Putri Permata M. (Entrepreneurship ’19), Novi Angelina Fabiola (Entrepreneurship ’19), and Reinard Lucky Cokro W. (Civil Engineering ’19) won first place in the Case Analysis Competition in Marketing Management at KBMK 2021. This statement was delivered by the official Instagram account of the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas) on Thursday (16/9/2021).

KBMK stands for National Student Competition in Business, Management, and Finance. In it, there are various fields of competition—this year there are eight. This event is held every year by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture through the Puspresnas. Therefore, universities are expected to send representatives.

“REN Team” that’s how these three people—Reinard (Lucky), Eunike (Princess), and Novi—were called. When asked why she took part in this competition, Novi said, “Actually, last year, she participated in Business Planning with Putri, but only passed to the semifinals. This year I can no longer participate because the business used last year has already won in other championships. Since it’s hard to come up with new business ideas, we decided to try marketing—something we’re passionate about too.”

The formation of a team and the internal selection process of ITB is also not an easy thing. The KBMK internal selection process was held by the ITB School of Business and Management (SBM) through the Ganesha Business Festival. So, to recruit someone outside of SBM, certain conditions are needed, namely to have won and excelled on campus.

Initially, the team only consisted of two people: Novi and Putri. Novi and Putri’s goal to invite Lucky from different faculties is to avoid the same busyness. Thus, the work process can always run because they can cover each other’s shortcomings.

KBMK in the field of marketing consists of three rounds: preliminary, semi-final, and final. According to Lucky, the unique thing about this competition is that the cases given are different from the events he has participated in before. He said that the participants were required to research in depth and think critically to solve problems.

The REN Team itself has also allocated a lot of time to explore the case. Novi said that most of their time is spent doing in-depth research so that they can define what really is the problem. Once defined, the solution to the problem becomes more visible.

In the competition, they were also assisted by their supervisor (dosbing), Annisa Rahmani Qastharin. However, consultation with dosbing can only be done at the preliminary and semifinal stages. The reason is, at the final stage, participants are expected to be able to solve problems within a period of only approximately 10 hours. So, this competition is really competitive and demands the potential of its students.

Speaking from the side of experience, there are many experiences and important lessons that they get. One of them when creating a team, it is important to discuss what expectations and goals you want to achieve together. Each member is expected to have the same motivation so that the potential of the team can really be maximized.

Putri said that this event taught her that apart from trying, we also need to pray. By praying, he can appear more confident when presenting his work to the jury. This competition also teaches Lucky, Putri, and Novi to always be grateful.

“Just go ahead. Just try it. We won’t know if we don’t try,” Lucky said when asked to message his fellow students. According to him, many people just “want”, but don’t dare to try. In fact, according to Lucky, motivation and curiosity will emerge when we have participated in it (the competition) so that we are motivated to develop.

On the other hand, Novi advised, “We must continue to be enthusiastic and dream. When we are tired, we must remember that our goal (dream) is to win first. Then, we must always pray and support each other, especially in the team.”

Finally, Putri added, “Continue to be faithful to what we do. For example, if you lose in a competition, that’s okay, we can learn from our mistakes. The important thing is that we always try to be better,” he concluded.
