Foreign Minister delivers UNGA statement, reiterates people-centered policy, emphasizes sustainability


The Minister of Foreign Affairs delivered a statement at the 79th UNGA, emphasizing the government’s people-centered policy, emphasizing sustainability, and advising the UN to be ready to deal with challenges and solve global unrest, hoping that Thailand will join the OECD and BRICS.

Mr. Maris Sangiampong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered a statement in the general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, reiterating Thailand’s commitment to implementing a people-centered government policy, adhering to the economic policy for sustainable development.

Mr. Maris spoke about the importance of reforming the United Nations to deal with global challenges more effectively, especially strengthening the process for peace and stability to be able to resolve unrest situations that occur in regions around the world. He also cited the example of the situation in Myanmar, which Thailand attaches importance to as a close neighboring cou
ntry, including promoting all parties to participate in creating peace in Myanmar that should occur from within Myanmar itself, and Thailand is ready to support humanitarian assistance continuously.

Mr. Maris also mentioned the importance of taking action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Thailand is ready to build a bridge to promote cooperation for development between the Global North and the Global South through its intention to join the OECD and BRICS, which is important for solving various global issues, such as climate change, which is a shared responsibility of all sectors and countries around the world to reduce the impact on human rights and human security. He also reiterated Thailand’s commitment to protect and promote human rights for all through the promotion of justice and equality in society, referring to Thailand’s application for membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the term of 2025-2027. Mr. Maris stressed the need to build a shared future fo
r the world where everyone is protected and prosperous through political commitment to address global challenges together, and expressed Thailand’s readiness to act as a bridge to promote international dialogue and trust.

During the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Mr. Maris also met with representatives of the Thai Association, the business sector, and the Thai media sector living in New York City. He spoke about the importance of people-centered foreign affairs and praised the Thai community for its strength and constructive participation in the missions of the Royal Thai Embassy and the Royal Thai Consulate-General, which are ready to listen to opinions and concerns in order to find ways of cooperation and support
