Former Pheu Thai Party Leader Pol. Lt. Gen. Wirot Pao-in Passes Away at 91

Bangkok: Pol. Lt. Gen. Wirot Pao-in, a former leader of the Pheu Thai Party and a respected political figure in Thailand, passed away peacefully at the age of 91. He was serving as a party-list Member of Parliament for the Pheu Thai Party at the time of his passing.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Wirot was elected as the No. 1 party-list MP for the Pheu Thai Party in the elections held on May 14, 2023, and played a crucial role as the chairman of the first meeting of the 26th parliament. His political journey was marked by his leadership during challenging times, including the period of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) coup.

Mr. Ko Kaew Phikunthong, another Pheu Thai Party list MP, expressed his condolences over Pol. Lt. Gen. Wirot’s passing. He highlighted Wirot’s leadership during the coup from 2014 to 2019, noting his resistance to the military dictatorship and his efforts to restore democratic power to the Thai people alongside then-party secretary Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai.

The successor to Pol. Lt. Gen. Wirot on the party-list MP roster will be Mr. Surasit Nithiwutthiworarak. Mr. Ko Kaew also praised Wirot’s contributions to the party, especially his legal expertise and guidance, which were invaluable to party members.

Mr. Ko Kaew expressed his commitment to cherishing the memory and kindness of Pol. Lt. Gen. Wirot, wishing him peace in the afterlife.
