Paris: French prosecutors in Paris have announced the arrest of five more suspects linked to the theft of $102 million worth of valuables from the Louvre Museum’s Apollo Gallery. The arrests have renewed hope among authorities that they may soon track down the missing gems.
According to Thai News Agency, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau revealed that the arrests were made during coordinated raids across various parts of the capital on Wednesday evening. One of the suspects was identified through DNA evidence found at the scene of the crime.
Previously, Beccuau disclosed that two other suspects, detained over the weekend, had “partially admitted” their involvement in the theft. One of these individuals was apprehended while attempting to flee France, prompting authorities to expedite their operations.
While the stolen gems have not yet been recovered, Beccuau remains optimistic that the recent arrests will shed light on the entire sequence of events surrounding the robbery. The high-profile heist has highlighted vulnerabilities in the security measures of the world’s most visited museum, causing a significant embarrassment for France.
Initial reports indicated that four individuals were involved in the robbery. However, Beccuau has not dismissed the possibility of a larger network being implicated, suggesting that there could be masterminds who orchestrated the heist or placed orders for the stolen items.
