G20 presidency can intensify cooperation to protect biodiversity: BRIN

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) stated that Indonesia’s G20 Presidency could bolster cooperation between G20 member countries to protect and save biodiversity from damage and loss.

“Indonesia encourages research and innovation collaboration between G20 countries in order to anticipate biodiversity loss and encourage sustainable use of biodiversity,” Acting Deputy for Research and Innovation Facilitation of BRIN Agus Haryono stated when contacted on Tuesday.

Haryono explained that the momentum offered by Indonesia’s G20 presidency also holds significance in ways, such as making Indonesia a hub or intermediary for efforts to rise together in dealing with environmental and biodiversity damage due to climate change.

Indonesia’s G20 Presidency also plays an essential role in building global collaboration in efforts to overcome the food and energy crises, with the current geopolitical turmoil having presented impacts on the food and energy crises.

Haryono is sanguine about various strategic cooperations between Indonesia and G20 member countries being formed to boost the economy and welfare of communities.

“We hope that Indonesia’s G20 Presidency this year would strengthen Indonesia’s cooperation in various fields, both bilaterally and multilaterally, for the common wellbeing,” he stated.

Earlier, the BRIN hosted the G20 Research and Innovation Initiative Gathering and the G20 Research and Innovation Ministers Meeting.

Those meetings agreed on a joint commitment to continue collaborations on research and innovation, especially regarding climate change and biodiversity.

“In these G20 meetings, we have a joint commitment to continue collaborations, even bolster (them), especially regarding climate change and biodiversity, both for conservation efforts and the use of biodiversity for the benefit of mankind,” BRIN Head Laksana Tri Handoko noted in Jakarta on October 28.

According to Handoko, Indonesia aims to use the momentum of the G20 presidency to become a global player, especially in terms of preserving and utilizing biodiversity.
