Gang Sentenced for Facebook ID Card Scam Targeting Foreigners

Bangkok: The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has announced that the Criminal Court has sentenced seven individuals to prison and ordered them to pay compensation to victims, following their involvement in a fraudulent ID card scam. This scam, perpetrated via Facebook pages, had a turnover exceeding 100 million baht.

According to Thai News Agency, the case involved a scheme that deceived people, particularly foreigners and those without ID cards, into making fraudulent ID cards. Victims were duped into transferring substantial sums of money through mule accounts. The DSI, in collaboration with the Technology and Information Crime Division and the Department of Provincial Administration, successfully arrested the suspects: Mr. Phonlakrom, Mr. Sipakorn, Ms. Yin, Ms. Kritporn, Ms. Waleerat, Ms. Wimonnat, and Mr. Hem.

The Special Case Investigation Team conducted thorough investigations, leading to the prosecution of the accused. The case summary was presented to the public prosecutor, resulting in a lawsuit filed against the perpetrators on April 30, 2024. The Criminal Court ruled on several offenses, including those related to documents, electronic cards, fraud, and violations under multiple acts such as the Computer Act and the National ID Card Act.

The court’s decision, rendered on June 5, 2568, found the defendants guilty of multiple offenses. Each defendant received a sentence of 2 years and 8 months and was ordered to jointly compensate the five victims affected by their fraudulent activities.
