Government encourages waste management through medium of film

The government has encouraged citizens to manage their waste in order to address the issue of ocean waste through a film titled “Bude Jo Belajar Kelola Sampah.”

“Film has now become a good platform to convey the message that there are various problems that we are facing, one of them being waste in the ocean,” Assistant Deputy of the Maritime Affairs and Investment Ministry’s Waste Management Rofi Al Hanif noted in a written statement here on Tuesday.

Hanif explained that marine debris resulted from insufficient waste management on land and the lack of public understanding of the importance of waste management.

Oceans have now become the last waste containment sites that will surely have wide-ranging negative impacts on humans and the surrounding ecosystems.

The management of ocean waste has now become an ambitious goal for the government to achieve. Various efforts made include policy making and massive dissemination campaign.

“We seek the citizens’ cooperation for reducing waste in the ocean. The film that was made by KLHK (Ministry of Environment and Forestry) is light and well-made that it could become an example for various groups, especially for us, who continually produce waste every day,” he expounded.

Hanif opined that currently, the campaign and dissemination could not be done directly, but rather by projecting various messages through works of art, such as this film.

“The people should now have greater awareness regarding the importance of waste management in order to care for the environment and it has now become part of living,” official from KLHK Agus Supriyanto stated.

Echoing Supriyanto’s opinion, the film series producer Wira Hardiprakoso admitted to being quite astonished by the scale of the problem pertaining to waste management.

Hardiprakoso spoke of being sentient of how humans produce so much waste in their daily cycle, and how this problem would be detrimental if not handled correctly and in a timely manner.
