Government Extends Student Loan Period for Seven Provinces

Bangkok: The government has announced an extension of the loan period provided by the Student Loan Fund (SLF) for students in schools across seven provinces. This initiative comes with a budget allocation of 8.488 billion baht to support the second round of loans for the academic year 2025. The extended loan system aims to benefit students attending educational institutions impacted by issues along the Thai-Cambodian border.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Government Spokesperson Anukul Prueksanusak disclosed that the government, via the SLF, is set to allocate a substantial budget of 8.488 billion baht. This funding is intended to cover tuition, living expenses, and other education-related costs for both existing and new student borrowers who qualify under the SLF’s criteria. The primary objective is to support uninterrupted student learning, preventing them from taking breaks or dropping out mid-term.

The student loans are also seen as a means to stimulate the economy by increasing spending in areas surrounding educational institutions. Funds received by students from the SLF are used to cover expenses related to books, study materials, dormitory fees, food, and other basic living costs. Educational institutions use tuition fees to hire personnel and purchase necessary teaching materials and equipment, thereby driving local consumption and stimulating the economy. The SLF is committed to expediting the loan disbursement process in line with the government’s educational promotion policy aimed at fostering human capital development and boosting the national economy.

Mr. Anukul further emphasized that the SLF’s loan system extension for the 2025 academic year targets students and educational institutions impacted by unrest at the Thai-Cambodian border. This measure is intended to provide necessary assistance and alleviate difficulties, ensuring that educational opportunities remain accessible to affected students.
