Government invites public to support vaccinations for older adults

Coinciding with International Day for Older Persons falling on October 1, 2021, the Indonesian government has invited all citizens to support the acceleration of vaccination for older adults.

By providing easy access to vaccinations, the government promotes the protection of health of older adults in Indonesia, so that they remain healthy, safe, and protected from COVID-19.

“We all know that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone, especially older adults, as the vulnerable group that needs more attention regarding protection (from the virus),” Minister of Communication and Informatics Johnny G. Plate noted in an official statement, Friday.

Plate believes International Day for Older Persons, celebrated on October 1 every year, would offer significant momentum to raise public awareness on the welfare of older adults, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Let us contribute to the acceleration of vaccination that is equal, including for our family and community members, who are part of the older adult populace. Let us help them access vaccination locations and oversee the implementation,” he remarked.

The government is currently still expediting vaccinations for 21.5 million older adults in the country. As of September 30, 2021, some 6.4 million elderly, or some 30 percent of the total vaccination target for older adults, have received the first dose of the vaccine, and 20 percent of the target had been fully vaccinated.

Apart from expediting COVID-19 vaccinations, the government continues to develop various programs to provide assistance to senior citizens, such as the Social Rehabilitation Assistance Program (ATENSI). Its flagship programs include the Family Hope Program (PKH), Non-Cash Food Assistance (BPNT), pension insurance, health insurance, and the provision of social and health centers that can meet the needs of older adults.
