Phuket: Heavy rain in Phuket Province has led to significant flooding in numerous areas, causing travel disruptions and posing challenges for residents. The torrential downpour, which began this afternoon due to the influence of Tropical Storm Fengchen, has resulted in stagnant water awaiting drainage. In contrast, nearby Phang Nga has seen an easing of floodwaters, allowing cleanup efforts to commence.
According to Thai News Agency, the heavy rain in Phuket has persisted since 3:50 PM, rendering several roads impassable. The Meteorological Department has cautioned residents about potential dangers from the heavy rainfall, including flash floods, mudslides, and river overflows, especially in hillside regions, low-lying areas, and those near waterways. Mariners have been advised to stay vigilant due to moderate winds and waves in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, with waves potentially exceeding 2 meters in thunderstorms.
In Phang Nga Province, the flooding situation in Khao Lak, Takua Pa District, one of the worst in the past two decades, has shown improvement. A brief pause in rainfall allowed water levels to recede, restoring a sense of normalcy. Officials, including Mr. Phichyapat Ruengchatri, Takua Pa District Chief, and Mr. Amontep Preekham, Acting Chief of the Phang Nga Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, collaborated with local leaders and community members to clean affected areas in preparation for incoming tourists.
Mr. Phichyapat Ruengchatri confirmed that the situation in Khao Lak has stabilized as water levels have drained into the sea. Residents and hotel operators are now assessing property damage and conducting cleanup operations along the beach. The continuous rainfall had caused severe flooding in Khuk Khak Subdistrict, marking one of the worst incidents in 20 years.
A local minimart owner in Soi Hat Nang Thong recounted the rapid rise of floodwaters, which surged over a meter high, causing extensive damage to his store and other nearby businesses. He noted that while annual flooding is common, this year’s event was unprecedented in its severity. The owner emphasized the need for authorities to address drainage issues to prevent future occurrences.
