Bangkok: The House Foreign Affairs Committee recently held a significant meeting with the ambassadors of the United Kingdom and the European Union to address the ongoing Thai-Cambodian border dispute. The purpose of the meeting was to clarify the facts surrounding the incident and discuss potential resolutions.
According to Thai News Agency, the meeting, chaired by Ms. Sarasnan Annoppaporn, MP for Khon Kaen from the Pheu Thai Party, included key members such as Mr. Chalat Ratchakitprakarn from the Bhumjaithai Party and Mr. Akara Thongchaisod from the Palang Pracharath Party. They convened with the diplomats to provide updates on the situation and address concerns about the safety of citizens in the affected areas.
Ms. Sarasnan emphasized that the conflict was fueled by multiple factors, notably the Thai government’s crackdown on illicit call centers, which had stirred tensions. She assured the ambassadors of Thailand’s commitment to international law and peaceful dialogue, expressing optimism about the countries’ dedication to restoring peace despite existing obstacles following the ceasefire.
During the discussions, questions were raised about the sudden escalation of the longstanding border dispute. Ms. Sarasnan attributed this to specific interests on the Cambodian side that were threatened by Thailand’s policies, such as the entertainment complex policy. The crackdown on call center operations was highlighted as a significant catalyst for Cambodia’s dissatisfaction.
The involvement of global powers like China and the United States, despite Malaysia’s mediation role outside the ASEAN framework, was another key issue. Ms. Sarasnan voiced concerns about the potential for the conflict to become a proxy war between the superpowers, warning that such a development could disproportionately harm Thailand economically.
The meeting concluded with assurances from the British and EU representatives, who expressed confidence in Thailand’s commitment to transparency and evidence-based communication. They stressed the importance of remaining neutral and considering both Thailand and Cambodia’s perspectives.
The Foreign Affairs Committee plans to continue engaging with international forums, including the International Inter-Parliamentary Union, to present Thailand’s stance and reinforce its adherence to international law, as stated by Ms. Sarasnan.
