Hungover Man Dies After Drinking Toilet Cleaner Mistaken for Carbonated Water

Buriram: A young man from Non Phluang Village in the Nong Yai Subdistrict of Satuek District tragically passed away after mistakenly drinking toilet cleaner, believing it to be carbonated water. The incident has left his family questioning the medical response he received.

According to Thai News Agency, the deceased, identified as Mr. Nattawut, or San, aged 44, was reportedly hungover and excessively thirsty when he inadvertently consumed the toxic liquid. On October 12th, around 11:00 AM, Mr. Nattawut picked up what he believed was a soda bottle containing a half-filled green liquid and drank it. It was later revealed to be toilet cleaner.

Upon realizing the mistake, Mr. Nattawut’s relatives rushed him to Satuk Hospital. At the time of his arrival, he was in good health and able to communicate clearly. Despite being presented with the bottle of toilet cleaner as evidence, the attending doctor advised him to collect medicine and return home without performing a gastric lavage.

Five hours after returning home, Mr. Nattawut went into shock, and his heart stopped. Emergency services were called, but they were unable to revive him. A doctor later examined the body at his home. Family members, including Mrs. Pranom, expressed their concerns to the doctor, questioning why Mr. Nattawut was not kept in the hospital for observation. The doctor reportedly stated that if Mr. Nattawut had not shown signs of distress, he would have been sent home.

Mr. That, the owner of the toilet cleaner, shared that he had purchased a large container of the cleaner and distributed it among relatives. He was present during the incident and remains concerned about the hospital’s decision not to perform a stomach pump despite being informed about the situation and provided with the cleaner sample.
