The Indonesian Transportation Ministry has sought to improve driving safety through the application of a sustainable urban transportation system.
“Improving road safety is always directly proportional to the availability of public transportation and a good and sustainable city transportation system,” Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stated during a virtual seminar titled “Indonesia Youth Road Safety Warriors” monitored here on Tuesday.
Sumadi remarked that safety in driving had always been the government’s concern.
The minister opined that the government had continued to offer motivation and raise awareness to consistently abide by the rules and regulations on driving.
The Transportation Ministry pushes for upholding the spirit of safe driving by following the 4As: alertness, awareness, attitude, and anticipation. “Driving by applying the principles of safe riding and not neglecting the safety aspect of driving are some important and very basic aspects,” he stressed.
On the other hand, the government not only focuses on increasing awareness in the use of transportation but also prioritizes imposing a policy of a sustainable transportation system.
There has always been a push to using several transportation types, such as public transport, and those means that do not cause pollution, including bicycles, electric bicycles, and by foot.
The Transportation Ministry also campaigns for road safety by capping speed limit to 30 kilometers per hours in residential areas, schools, and places of activity.
The minister expects that the target of achieving zero fatalities can be achieved through the government’s efforts.
“With this webinar, I am also optimistic that the younger generation would become the pioneers of driving safety in Indonesia. It is expected to offer cues and benefits for the advancement of transportation safety,” he added.
