Indonesia makes preparations for COP26 through inter-state cooperation

Indonesia has made several preparations ahead of its participation in the Conference of Parties (COP) 26 on climate change in Glasgow, England, from October 31 to November 12, 2021.

The country has reached an agreement to collaborate with Brazil on the issue of tropical forests at the conference, as both countries have the world’s largest tropical forests, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar noted here on Monday

Earlier, the agreement was discussed by the Indonesian minister and her Brazilian counterparts through a virtual meeting held on October 22, 2021

Apart from Brazil, Indonesia will cooperate with the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the issue, with the tagline of Forest Power to Glasgow.

In addition, Indonesia has set a target for the Forest and other Land Use Sector to become a net sink of carbon by 2030, which is something that the country’s delegation will push for at the conference.

Furthermore, the government held a final coordination meeting ahead of the conference among the heads of ministries and technical institutions regarding reducing greenhouse gas emissions on Saturday.

The government had set a target of reducing emissions by 29 percent through their own efforts and up to 41 percent with the help of other countries via financial or technological assistance.

The attempt aims to achieve the net carbon sink target in 2030 and climate-resilient Indonesia in 2060.

In addition, the minister has highlighted the importance of negotiating the technical arrangements for the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement that has not been completed since the implementation of COP24 in 2018.

The article demands voluntary international cooperation to fulfill the Nationally Determined Contribution through market and non-market mechanisms.

According to Bakar, Indonesia has prepared all infrastructure to support the policy, for instance, the Presidential Regulation on the Economic Value of Carbon.

In addition, the Finance Ministry has established a carbon tax to strengthen the regulation. Currently, the ministry is preparing its implications on the international trade sector.

Akin to the earlier conferences, the Indonesian delegation to the COP26 will comprise both state and non-state actors.

“Indonesia is proud that the implementation of the Leading by Example policy is not only conducted by the government but also by non-governmental actors,” the minister added.
