Indonesia stressed the necessity to rearrange counter-terrorism strategy to curb current and future threats in cyberspace.

Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi made the remark at the 12th Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF) Ministerial Meeting in New York on Wednesday.

The GCTF meeting was held on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly and aimed to plan the forum’s priorities and activities going forward.

Retno, who co-chaired the countering violent extremism working group meeting, said: “The threat of terrorism continues to increase and penetrates cyberspace.”

She pointed out that the-whole-of-society approach involving the government and the community, especially women, is of utmost importance in countering extremism and tackling terrorism.

In a statement released here, she called for the strengthening of technology experts’ cooperation to prevent the use of information infrastructures for acts of cyberterrorism.

Financial Intelligence Units also need to cooperate with the banking and financial institutions to break the chain of terrorism financing, including responding to new trends, such as the use of virtual currencies.

The GCTF, which was formed in 2011, focuses on capacity building and networking in countering terrorism, and to share experiences, capacity building, as well as best practices.

Indonesia and Australia recently launched a toolkit on gender-sensitive approaches to tackle extremism.
