Indonesia’s 2022 G20 Presidency can be beneficial for nation: CORE

Research Director from Indonesia’s Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Piter Abdullah opined that Indonesia’s 2022 G20 Presidency can be beneficial for the nation.

“We know that issues and decisions taken by G20 will have a big impact on the global economy, including that of our nation. As a president, we can direct (G20 members) to pay heed to issues that would benefit Indonesia,” Abdullah told ANTARA here on Tuesday.

As an example,he believes that Indonesia can draw attention to the unfair treatment that its palm oil products received from the European Union member countries within the forum.

However, in order to ensure that Indonesia can reap this benefit, the government should make thorough preparations for the G20 forum.

“The government should prepare physical facilities and meeting topics that will be brought up during the G20 meeting,” Abdullah suggested.

He believes that meeting topics were the most important aspect, so the G20 meeting results and decisions can be beneficial for Indonesia.

The government should make an effort to stem the spread of COVID-19, so that the G20 meeting can run well and without any worries, he stated.

The transfer of leadership from Italy to Indonesia will be conducted during the G20 Summit in Rome at the end of October this year.

Indonesia will then officially assume the presidency for G20 from December 1, 2021, until November 2022, based on the theme of “Recover Together, Recover Stronger.”

The G20 presidency for the 2021-2022 period will be the first time that Indonesia will chair the G20 leaders’ meeting, ever since the forum, which has contributed 85 percent of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), was established in 1999.
