KPU should focus on its electronic system’s cyber defense: Minister

Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate reminded the General Elections Commission (KPU) to commit to utmost protection of its entire elections-related electronic system against cyberattacks.

“The General Elections Commission, as the organizer of the electronic system, needs to pay serious attention to defense against cyber-attacks in all of its electronic systems,” the minister noted at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the commission and the ministry at the General Elections Commission Building here on Tuesday.

The MoU pertains to cooperation in the use of information services in organizing regional elections and the 2024 Simultaneous Election.

Minister Plate noted that the commission should maintain cyber resilience in order to ensure legitimacy of the results of the 2024 Simultaneous Election. He deemed it crucial to optimize defense against cyberattacks in order to ensure the success of the 2024 Election.

“I certainly expect that our elections in 2024 would be more successful, better, of greater quality, and produce future leaders for Indonesia,” he noted.

He also reminded the commission that the success of elections was determined by the organizers and not the government. Thus, he urged them to do their best.

Moreover, the minister highlighted that the government has continued to provide full support to election management bodies: the General Elections Commission, the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), and the Election Organizer Ethics Council (DKPP).

As for the newly signed memorandum of understanding, the minister considered it as one measure of the government to fully support the election management body in holding a democratic party.

“This memorandum of understanding is a real form of the government giving full support to election organizers, whether it is the General Elections Commission, the Election Supervisory Agency, and the Election Organizer Ethics Council, so that our elections can be held in accordance with the Constitution and laws and produce legitimate leaders,” the minister concluded.
