Maris Dismisses Cambodia’s UN Complaint, Urges Sincerity in Demining Efforts

Bangkok: Maris Sengiampong, Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has dismissed Cambodia’s complaint to the United Nations, which accuses Thailand of violating a ceasefire agreement. Maris mocked the absence of discussion on the issue, stating his belief that the UN understands the situation. He revealed discussions with friendly countries, noting Cambodia’s repeated use of landmines. Maris expressed readiness to present evidence and urged Cambodia to join the demining group and comply with the Ottawa Convention.

According to Thai News Agency, Maris addressed the Cambodian Foreign Minister’s letter to the UN, which alleged Thailand’s violation of sovereignty and ceasefire agreements. Despite Cambodia’s complaint, the UN has not convened a meeting on the matter, while Thailand has consistently sent clarification letters to the UN.

He emphasized cooperation between Thailand’s foreign affairs ministry and military in providing support to address the issue. Maris reiterated Thailand’s commitment to transparency and compliance with international law, emphasizing pressure on Cambodia both bilaterally and multilaterally.

During the Mekong-Lancang Summit in China, Maris planned to inform member countries of the situation. He highlighted ongoing efforts to clarify Thailand’s position to international allies, emphasizing Cambodia’s lack of sincerity. Maris thanked the military for successful international relations and diplomacy.

He emphasized the need for Cambodia to halt the use of anti-personnel mines and comply with international agreements. Maris reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the issue through the Ottawa Convention mechanisms and cooperation with regional partners like ASEAN.

Maris criticized Cambodia’s evasive stance on demining efforts, highlighting ongoing efforts since the time of previous Thai leaders. He called for regional cooperation and support from ASEAN countries to pressure Cambodia into sincere collaboration with Thailand.

Maris concluded by expressing gratitude to Japan for its assistance in demining technology and know-how. He announced plans for a meeting with relevant agencies and member states to discuss Thailand’s next steps. He urged Cambodia to demonstrate sincerity in resolving the issue and committed to gathering evidence to inform international partners.
