Maris Sets Strategic Direction for Thai Diplomacy at International Conference

Bangkok: “Maris”, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with Thai Ambassadors and Consuls-General to push for Thai benefits to meet global challenges, create income for the people, and emphasized “Proactive Economic Ambassadors” to push the engine of the economy and new industries to accept global trends. Today (9 June), Mr. Marist Sengiampong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, gave a policy to ambassadors and consuls-general at the 2025 International Conference of Thai Ambassadors and Consuls-General to jointly determine the direction and approach to driving foreign policy in an increasingly complex global context.

According to Thai News Agency, the conference was themed ‘Proactive Diplomacy That Meets the People: From Policy to Practice’. Mr. Maris highlighted the importance of this meeting during a pivotal time when the world is experiencing significant shifts in power structures and a multi-polar world order. He noted the potential for conflicts between old and new superpowers, which could lead to global instability, economic downturns, and military conflicts. In response, he urged ambassadors and consuls-general to assess the broader impacts and adjust foreign policy goals and strategies to align with the current global context.

Mr. Maris outlined the principles guiding Thailand’s foreign policy, focusing on maintaining strategic balance with superpowers and engaging with minor superpowers to spread risks. He emphasized Thailand’s strengths in not choosing sides, prioritizing national interests, and participating in the formulation of a new world order. He cited Thailand’s constructive role in addressing issues in Myanmar and combating online crimes as examples of its diplomatic contributions.

Further, Mr. Maris advocated for proactive economic diplomacy to boost GDP growth through new industries in high demand globally, such as Semiconductor, AI, and Electric Vehicles. The government aims to attract investment in seven target industries and enhance competitiveness through infrastructure development. He stressed the need to maintain traditional economic engines like tourism and agricultural exports while attracting foreign investment to benefit the Thai population.

Mr. Maris expressed his hope that the outcomes of the meeting would lead to a people-centered foreign policy, tangible diplomacy, and an improved quality of life for Thai citizens.
