MEA Warns About Life-Threatening Risks of Modifying Home Electrical Systems for Bitcoin Mining

Bang phli: MEA warns: Modifying home electrical systems and mining Bitcoin poses a fire risk and can be life-threatening after a fire broke out at the perpetrator’s house. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) has issued a stark warning to the public regarding the severe dangers associated with the modification of home electrical systems and overloading circuits, particularly in the context of Bitcoin mining. This announcement follows a devastating fire incident at a two-story townhouse in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan Province, suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit in a room equipped with Bitcoin mining apparatus.

According to Thai News Agency, the MEA has expressed grave concerns over the safety of both residents and their properties. The incident highlights the high risk of heat accumulation in electrical wires and equipment, which can lead to short circuits and potentially disastrous fires. During the firefighting efforts, reports indicate that responders were exposed to electrical leakage, further underscoring the hazards of improper electrical setups.

The MEA has reiterated the critical dangers involved in unauthorized electrical modifications. Such actions, aside from being illegal-particularly if they involve tampering with meters or electricity theft-can result in significant and unpredictable losses. The authority stresses that altering electricity meters, making illegal connections, or installing powerful appliances without adhering to standard regulations is not only punishable by imprisonment and fines but also jeopardizes the integrity of the main electrical system. This can lead to extensive power outages affecting the public and pose severe fire risks, endangering both personal and communal safety.

The MEA urges the public to report any suspicious activities related to electricity theft or unsafe electrical usage through their various channels. These include the MEA Smart Life application, Line: MEA Connect (MEAthailand), or the MEA Call Center, which is available at 1130, 24 hours a day.
