Bangkok: The Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding heavy rain in various regions of Thailand, particularly affecting the North, Central, and Eastern areas. The provinces identified for potential heavy rainfall include Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, and Nan. Residents in these areas are urged to exercise caution due to possible flash floods and forest runoff.
According to Thai News Agency, the Meteorological Department forecasts that thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to persist over the next 24 hours in the specified regions. This weather pattern is attributed to a low-pressure cell situated over the upper parts of Myanmar and Laos, coupled with the moderate southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. The department advises people, especially those residing on hillsides near waterways and lowlands, to be vigilant as accumulated rainfall might lead to dangerous conditions.
The Andaman Sea is experiencing moderate waves, with the upper part having waves up to 2 meters high. In contrast, the lower Andaman Sea sees waves between 1 to 2 meters. Thunderstorms in these areas may result in even higher waves. Sailors are advised to proceed with caution and avoid areas experiencing thunderstorms.
Additionally, the Meteorological Department noted a depression in the eastern Philippines that is likely to intensify into a tropical storm. This system is anticipated to move through northern Philippines into the upper South China Sea between July 19 and 22. This development is expected to strengthen the southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, resulting in increased rainfall and heavier downpours in certain areas. Consequently, waves in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand are predicted to be quite strong, reaching heights of 2-3 meters, with even higher waves during thunderstorms.
For Bangkok and its vicinity, the forecast indicates a 70% chance of thunderstorms, with heavy rain expected in some areas. The temperature is expected to range between a minimum of 24-26 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 33-35 degrees Celsius.
