The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) has allocated a budget of Rp19.3 billion to build vertical housing or flats for low-income people (MBR) in Yogyakarta.

“Total budget for construction of the flats in Yogyakarta reaches Rp19.3 billion,” the ministry’s Director General of Housing Khalawi Abdul Hamid noted in a statement here, Friday.

Hamid revealed that the work to construct the flats had reached 57.54-percent completion and would be fully ready by the end of October 2021.

According to Hamid, the development is necessary on account of the fact that the land for housing was increasingly limited, and flats are viewed as being an alternative housing for low-income people..

“Currently, we are encouraging the construction of vertical housing in Yogyakarta in the form of flats for low-income people. We want to provide livable housing at affordable rental costs to MBR,” he affirmed.

Khalawi explained that the development program was being implemented not only for low-income people but also for civil servants, who served in border areas and students studying at universities and Islamic boarding schools.

Moreover, he remarked that vertical housing currently being built by the ministry not only focused on the quality of the building being constructed but would also be equipped with furniture.

“Construction of flats aligns with the directive of President Joko Widodo and the PUPR minister to help low-income people to have habitable houses. The flats now have all facilities, including furniture, and the rental costs are also very affordable,” he noted.

Head of the Java III Regional Housing Provision Agency (P2P), M. Mulya Permana, noted that the MBR flats were constructed on Jalan Sidomulyo, Bener Tegalrejo, Yogyakarta City.

The flats are built as one tower reaching as high as three floors. It is designated as a type 36 dwelling with 44 units. Each unit has a kitchen, toilet, bedroom, and children’s room.

In 2021, the ministry had built four flats in Yogyakarta.

In addition to the flats for low-income people, the other residences are the Tahfidzul Islamic Boarding School flats in Kulon Progo District, Ki Ageng Wonokusumo Islamic Boarding School flats in Gunung Kidul District, and Ora Ali Islamic Boarding School flats in Sleman District.
