Ministry asks citizens to strengthen healthy lifestyle habits

The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK) has emphasized the importance of strengthening clean and healthy lifestyle behaviors for preventing health problems.

“Let’s strengthen the implementation of a clean and healthy lifestyle through the Healthy Living Community Movement (Germas),” Assistant Deputy for Nutrition Resilience and Health Promotion at the ministry, Jelsi Natalia Marampa, said in a statement issued here on Monday.

Germas is one of the efforts to improve public health resilience by prioritizing promotive and preventive efforts, Marampa explained.

“The movement is a very effective step to reduce mortality and morbidity caused by non-communicable and communicable diseases,” she said.

She added that Germas aims to promote a culture of healthy living and help people leave unhealthy habits and behaviors behind.

“To support the implementation of Germas, the government continues to improve outreach and education in order to socialize clean and healthy living behaviors as well as support community-based supporting infrastructure,” she said.

It is hoped that a healthy society and quality human resources can be realized through the implementation of Germas, she added.

“The biggest challenge is how to civilize Germas so that it can become a lifestyle for the community, and make this lifestyle a major requirement in every aspect of people’s lives,” she said.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s Deputy for Health Quality Improvement and Population Development Coordination, Agus Suprapto, said that the ministry is actively raising awareness on the importance of heart disease prevention among the public.

The government is continuing to improve the Germas campaign, in accordance with the Presidential Instruction Number 1 of 2017 concerning the Healthy Living Community Movement in order to encourage people to prioritize a promotive and preventive healthy paradigm, he added.

The movement includes seven steps, comprising performing physical activity, eating fruits and vegetables, refraining from smoking, avoiding alcoholic beverages, carrying out regular health checks, keeping the environment clean, and using the toilet.
