Ministry expects ASEAN members to support binding extradition treaty

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Law and Human Rights Ministry expected that the ASEAN can advance in the efforts to have a binding extradition treaty for all member states."It is expected that ASEAN can be one step ahead in supporting the region's efforts to have an extradition treaty that binds all ASEAN member states," Director General of Legal Administrative Affairs Cahyo R. Muzhar stated here on Friday. Muzhar accentuated that efforts to create a binding extradition treaty align with ASEAN leaders' commitment contained in the 1976 ASEAN Concord Declaration in Bali. Muzhar, who serves as Indonesia's leader for the ASEAN Senior Law Officials Meeting (ASLOM), remarked that the treaty will demonstrate ASEAN's strong commitment to working together with the international community in tackling and eradicating transnational crimes. He emphasized that the eradication of transnational crimes is essential in supporting the realization of a safe, stable, and prosperous ASEAN region. "The eradication of transnational crime is vital in supporting the realization of a safe, stable, and prosperous ASEAN region," he remarked. In hosting and chairing the negotiations of the 4th meeting of the ASLOM Working Group on the ASEAN Extradition Treaty (WG on AET) held in Bali on March 13-15, Indonesia also encouraged the realization of AET, Muzhar remarked. The agreement on AET is expected to strengthen law enforcement cooperation among ASEAN member states in eradicating crimes, especially transnational crimes. "The Ministry of Law and Human Rights is the focal point in ASLOM," he explained. He noted that the establishment of the ASLOM Working Group on the ASEAN Extradition Treaty was a mandate of the ASEAN legal ministers' meeting with ASLOM. "We have completed the first reading in this fourth meeting of WG on AET. This is an important capital to complete (the preparations of) AET according to the target," he stated. Furthermore, he expressed gratitude to all parties that supported the meeting, including delegations of ASEAN member states and the ASEAN Secretariat.
