Motorcyclist Dies After Crashing Into Concrete Cover and Falling into Cable Well in Bangkok

Bangkok: A young man riding a motorcycle met a tragic fate after crashing into a concrete cover and subsequently falling into a cable-routing well, leading to his untimely death.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident was reported to Police Lieutenant Colonel Jenwit Luephon, Deputy Inspector at Thung Song Hong Police Station, in the early hours of August 11, 2015. The accident occurred on Chaeng Watthana Road, near the Administrative Court in the Thung Song Hong Subdistrict of Bangkok. The site was near the Chaloem Phrakiat Government Complex BTS station, where construction for an underground electrical cable project was ongoing, resulting in the closure of three left lanes on the five-lane road.

The 26-year-old victim, identified as Mr. Santisuk, crashed his cream-colored motorcycle into a generator near a 10-meter-deep cable well. The impact was severe, with the motorcycle’s front end showing significant damage. The driver was thrown into the well, where he drowned. Rescue officials from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation used rappelling equipment to recover the body, which exhibited injuries and a fractured skull.

Witnesses at the construction site stated that the area had been properly marked with barriers and warning lights due to the ongoing project. The concrete cover had been opened for workers to install electrical conduits underground. Despite these precautions, the motorcycle breached the barrier and collided with the cover, causing the rider to be ejected into the water below. The road had been undergoing nightly closures for two weeks from 10:00 PM to 3:00 AM for the construction work, leading up to the accident.

Authorities have begun an investigation to ascertain whether any negligence occurred on the part of the supervising engineer. Meanwhile, the deceased’s body was transported to Bhumibol Hospital and his family was notified for collection.
