Mysterious Drone Sightings Spark Security Concerns Across Thailand

Buriram: Despite a nationwide ban on drone flying, mysterious drones have been detected in several areas across Thailand, raising concerns about potential espionage activities. The Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AEROTHAI) is urging public cooperation, emphasizing that any violations will be addressed immediately by military forces.

According to Thai News Agency, rescue workers from the Sawang Charoenya rescue unit in Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Buriram Province, reported seeing a drone flying over Chaloem Phra Kiat Hospital and several other locations. The drone was observed for approximately five minutes before a black Hyundai van, believed to be associated with the drone, was seen leaving the area. Attempts to follow the van, which reportedly contained three or four people with a control device, were unsuccessful. The drone is suspected to be of Cambodian origin, potentially engaging in espionage activities.

In Ban Kruat District, Buriram Province, multiple mysterious drones were sighted, covering seven subdistricts from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. A drone was notably detected near the 5th Ban Kruat District Volunteer Defense Corps building, prompting officers to attempt to shoot it down with M-16 rifles. However, the drone managed to escape unharmed.

The district has instructed local leaders and volunteers to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious drone activity to the authorities. The Thai military confirmed that the drones are not part of their operations and have urged communities to be alert for any unusual activities.

The Department of Land Transport has implemented a nationwide ban on drone flights, with violators facing military action. Despite existing anti-drone systems being operational in certain security-controlled provinces, they are not implemented nationwide, necessitating public cooperation to mitigate potential security threats.

The Nakhon Ratchasima Air Force Base 1 has issued a directive requesting a suspension of unmanned aircraft operations within a 9-kilometer radius of the base. This is part of a broader initiative involving provincial agencies, the 2nd Army Area, and the 3rd Provincial Police Region to enhance surveillance and air defense measures. Surveillance points have been set up to monitor vehicles entering key military and security areas.

Wing 1 Nakhon Ratchasima has called on local residents to report any illegal drone activities, offering a reward for information leading to arrests. Residents are encouraged to contact the Royal Thai Army Aviation Training Center with any relevant information.
