Narathiwat Court Concludes Tak Bai Case Amid Calls for Accountability

Narathiwat: The Narathiwat Provincial Court conducted the closing ceremony for the high-profile Tak Bai case, marking the end of a legal saga that has spanned nearly two decades. The case was dismissed as the statute of limitations expired without any of the seven defendants being arrested or surrendering, despite the gravity of the allegations.

According to Thai News Agency, the court session was attended by a crowd of plaintiffs, lawyers, and supporters who gathered to witness the official dismissal of charges against seven former high-ranking officials. These officials had been accused in connection with the Tak Bai police station dispersal incident. Mr. Ratsada Manurassada, representing the plaintiffs, explained that the court’s dismissal follows legal procedures after the statute of limitations lapsed. He emphasized the historical significance of the case, suggesting that further investigation into the facts should continue.

Relatives of the deceased are reportedly taking steps to ensure accountability
. They plan to petition for the suspension of government pensions for the former officials involved and are urging the Prime Minister to investigate potential negligence by the Nong Chik Police Station under Section 157. This follows the nearly 19-year disappearance of the criminal case file, which was only recently submitted, leading to an indictment order by the Attorney General on September 12. The plaintiffs are also appealing to the Committee on Law, Justice and Human Rights, which has formed a subcommittee to review the matter.

Security was tight outside the courthouse, with police and security forces deployed to maintain order as the court began closing statements.
