National Fleet Day: Young scouts set sail on naval warship

Naval Chief of Staff Admiral Yudo Margono extended an invitation to youths engaged in the maritime field to sail on the Teluk Palu-523 state warship on National Fleet Day, which is commemorated every December 5.

“(The move aimed) To encourage the younger generation to join Satuan Karya Bahari (maritime scouts organization) and understand about maritime affairs,” Margono, who also serves as chairperson of the National Saka Bahari Advisory Council, said here on Friday.

The youths who boarded the warship were maritime scout troops from Satuan Karya Bahari, young maritime ambassadors from Putra Putri Maritim Indonesia, and the Indonesian Maritime Youths organization.

At least 488 participants and trainers joined the “Sailing Camp 2022” scheduled from December 9 to December 11.

As part of the camp, the participants sailed on the Teluk Palu-523 warship from the Command of Military Sea Traffic Headquarters, North Jakarta, to Sebaru Island located in the Seribu Islands.

Margono said the inaugural activity was carried out for Saka Bahari scouts, which are guided by the Navy.

He expressed the hope that the activity would shape the maritime character of the Saka Bahari ambassadors, who came from many regions.

Meanwhile, the camping activities on Sebaru Island will involve material briefings, social services, introduction and training in water sports, and competitions, among others.

North Jakarta city secretary Abdul Khalit described the activity as great, considering that the goal is to realize a generation of young scouts who have knowledge of and insight into the nation, care for the environment, and love the sea.

“Moreover, they are given the opportunity to sail using a navy warship and camp on Sebaru Island. This will be a memorable and valuable experience for the ‘2022 Sailing Camp’ participants,” Khalit said.
