Sattahip: The Royal Thai Navy has enhanced its defense capabilities by acquiring a new 155mm self-propelled howitzer, capable of firing up to 40 kilometers, to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty.
According to Thai News Agency, Admiral Natthaphon Diaowanich, Commander-in-Chief of the Fleet, received six of these advanced artillery systems at a ceremony held at the Marine Corps Headquarters, Camp Krom Luang Chumphon, in Chonburi Province. The event was attended by Vice Admiral Thadawut Thatphithakkul, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Navy, along with senior military officers and personnel.
The acquisition of the 155mm self-propelled howitzers is a strategic initiative to boost the Royal Thai Navy’s combat capabilities. The project, spanning from fiscal years 2023 to 2025, aims to reinforce the nation’s defense infrastructure with a budget of 929,486,100.00 baht. The procurement process was managed by the Arms Production Center in collaboration with Israel’s Elbit Systems, integrating the ATMOS system onto a Tatra 6×6 truck from the Czech Republic.
The newly acquired artillery boasts a range exceeding 40 kilometers and a firing rate of six rounds per minute, promising a significant enhancement in military readiness. This initiative underscores Thailand’s strides towards self-reliance in military technology, with successful completion of all contractual obligations, including testing, training, and technology transfer. The systems are now ready for deployment within the Royal Thai Navy.
