Noppadol Urges Government to Intensify Efforts in Thai-Cambodian Border Dispute

Bangkok: Mr. Noppadon Pattama, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, has called on the government to enhance its efforts in resolving the Thai-Cambodian border issue.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Noppadol recommended the implementation of four additional measures to address the ongoing problems. The Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) is currently handling the issue in Phnom Penh, while Cambodia plans to submit three temples and one area to the International Court of Justice on June 15.

Mr. Noppadol emphasized the importance of the government intensifying its efforts in resolving the issue and communicating information to the public. He highlighted the need for early preparation for legal and international political challenges, while reaffirming Thailand’s position in defending its sovereignty. He also stressed the importance of bilateral negotiations under the framework of the 43rd Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and reiterated Thailand’s stance of not accepting the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice.

He proposed that the government invite representatives of foreign embassies in Thailand to attend a meeting to receive information related to the Thai-Cambodian problem. This would ensure clarity in portraying Thailand as a country that adheres to international rules, respects territorial integrity, and maintains a reputable image on the world stage.

Additionally, Mr. Noppadol suggested that the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the United Nations in New York engage with the Permanent Representatives of countries on the UN Security Council to update them on the situation. This preparation would be crucial if Cambodia decides to bring the issue to the UN Security Council.

He also recommended establishing a legal working group to monitor the issues between Thailand and Cambodia. This initiative aims to prepare for the outcomes of Cambodia’s submission to the International Court of Justice, despite Thailand’s non-acceptance of its jurisdiction.

Furthermore, Mr. Noppadol advised adjusting the intensity and proportion of communication to match the information provided by Cambodia. This would ensure that communication is timely, complete, rapid, and effective, thereby assuring the Thai public that the government can preserve the country’s sovereignty while maintaining relations with neighboring countries.

In conclusion, Mr. Noppadol expressed his support for the government’s adherence to bilateral negotiations under the 43rd MOU and the clear stance on the International Court of Justice. He encouraged government officials to continue their efforts in protecting the nation’s sovereignty and fostering good relations with neighboring countries.
