Noppadon Urges Expedited Meetings to Resolve Thai-Cambodian Border Dispute

Bangkok: Noppadol Pattama, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the necessity of expediting RBC and JBC meetings to address unresolved border issues between Thailand and Cambodia. He expressed optimism about the recent GBC negotiations, although he acknowledged that significant work remains.

According to Thai News Agency, Noppadol highlighted the importance of monitoring compliance with the GBC agreement, suggesting that an observer team could provide transparency regarding adherence to the conditions. He emphasized the need for regional or regional commander-level meetings to further explore details, with a particular focus on the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meetings. Noppadol pointed out that without clear boundary demarcation, future conflicts could arise, stressing the role of the Joint Technical Committee under the 2000 MOU framework in clarifying boundaries and preventing territorial disputes.

Noppadol also referenced a public opinion survey indicating that nearly 50% of the public supports serious negotiations to resolve the Thai-Cambodian dispute. He reiterated his belief in diplomatic solutions, asserting that lasting peace between neighboring countries is achievable through negotiations. Noppadol urged the government to continue pursuing diplomatic resolutions to protect sovereignty and achieve a peaceful settlement.
