OBEC Expresses Concern Over Private School Teacher Assault Incident

Nong chang: The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) has expressed concern following an incident involving a Mathayom 5 student who assaulted a private school teacher due to dissatisfaction with exam results. The OBEC has taken steps to address the issue, emphasizing the need for schools to remain safe spaces.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred when a male Mathayom 5 student physically assaulted a female teacher in the classroom of a private school in Nong Chang District, Uthai Thani Province. The student, upset over poor test scores, kicked and punched the teacher more than ten times, leaving her with injuries that required hospital treatment.

Acting Sub-Lieutenant Thanu Wongchinda, Secretary-General of OBEC, stated that their investigation, conducted by the OBEC’s Happiness and Safety Management Center in collaboration with the Uthai Thani and Chainat Secondary Educational Service Area Offices, revealed that the school falls under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Private Education Commission (OPEC) rather than OBEC. He extended condolences to the injured teacher and highlighted the incident’s impact on all parties involved, including students, classmates, and parents. The OPEC will continue its investigation.

He further mentioned the necessity of examining the factors contributing to the student’s behavior and addressing the emotional and psychological impacts on classmates, parents, and the school community.

For schools under OBEC’s jurisdiction, this incident serves as a lesson in reinforcing student care systems. The focus will be on prevention and problem-solving, enhancing communication and emotional management skills, and fostering a culture of mutual respect. This approach aims to ensure that schools remain safe environments, with cooperation from teachers, students, parents, and the community being crucial.
