Official presses for transparency in education development efforts

Deputy Chairperson of the People’s Consultative Assembly Lestari Moerdijat emphasized the need for transparency in the government’s measures to pursue development of the education sector in Indonesia.

“Efforts to pursue the development of national education require transparency of the process it goes through,” Moerdijat noted in a written statement received here on Monday.

Through such transparency, people and relevant stakeholders can develop a clear understanding of the inner workings behind their measures, so that they too could support and even chip in to all these efforts, she opined.

Moerdijat made the statement in response to the news about the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim, who during an international forum in New York, the United States, claimed to have a special team to ensure the success of education programs in Indonesia.

Several people also questioned the existence of the special team that was feared to lead to an overlap in roles with the existing bureaucracy.

On a separate occasion, Makarim pointed out that a special team of 400 people and called GovTech Edu was a vendor contracted by the ministry.

The minister said that the team could voice and discuss various opinions with officials in the ministry regarding the efforts to develop the education sector.

To this end, Moerdijat expected the minister and his staff to inform stakeholders of the special team’s duties and functions , so that a similar understanding arises of the efforts made to accelerate development of the national education sector.

Moerdijat also called for making earnest efforts, as education was one of the important aspects necessary in order to improve the competitiveness of Indonesian human resources, so they could compete with those of other nations.

“Efforts to adapt and accelerate the development of national education must really be pursued, considering the education sector is one of the important sectors needed by this nation to increase competitiveness in order to be able to compete with other nations in the world,” she concluded.
