Rayong: Police have apprehended Ms. Kamonwan, the suspect in the brutal murder of Ms. Wanna Kerner, aged 67, who was lured into a deadly trap, killed, and robbed of her possessions.
According to Thai News Agency, the crime was driven by Ms. Kamonwan’s desperation due to debts incurred from online gambling. The suspect confessed to the crime, expressing remorse to the victim’s family during a reenactment of the crime scene.
At noon, Wang Chan Police Station escorted Ms. Kamonwan to the scene of the crime, a palm plantation in Tambon Pa Yup Nai, Rayong Province, to reenact the murder. The reenactment, heavily guarded by police to maintain order, detailed how the suspect attacked Ms. Kerner with an iron rod, ultimately beating her to death before severing her fingers to steal diamond rings. The suspect then discarded the weapon and the victim’s mobile phone to conceal evidence before selling the stolen jewelry.
The reenactment was marked by emotional outbursts from the deceased’s brother, who questioned the
suspect’s motives and cursed her actions. Ms. Kamonwan was later taken to Wang Chan Police Station and is set to appear in court. She addressed the media, apologizing to the victim’s family and warning others against similar actions driven by gambling addiction.
Pol Maj Gen Chatchai Surachetphong, from Provincial Police Region 2, confirmed the murder’s motive was rooted in financial distress from gambling debts. Evidence collected corroborated the suspect acted alone, and the police have successfully retrieved stolen items, including jewelry and the suspect’s vehicle, vital to building the case against her.
