Bangkok: In the wake of a tragic shooting at the Or Tor Kor Market in Chatuchak, which claimed six lives, the market has announced a one-day closure to mourn the victims. All shops remain closed, although some vendors have been permitted to inspect and retrieve their items. Families of the deceased have invited monks to perform religious rites in remembrance of their loved ones.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident unfolded when a man opened fire at point-blank range, killing five men and one woman before turning the gun on himself. The gunman’s motive is believed to stem from a longstanding grievance with a security guard, Anan Panchuen, who was among the victims. The gunman’s wife revealed that her husband often expressed frustration over a past incident involving a scratch on his car, allegedly caused by Anan.
The mother of Anan Panchuen expressed her grief, recalling her last conversation with her son. She visited the site to pay homage and pray for his peaceful rest. Her mental state, like that of other victims’ families, is described as extremely dire. The Institute of Forensic Medicine confirmed that all deaths resulted from gunshot wounds to vital organs.
Police investigations revealed that the gunman had previously threatened a taxi driver with a gun to transport him to the market. Upon arrival, he shot three security guards, tracked down Anan, and subsequently shot a vendor. The Director of Or Tor Kor Market stated that investigations, including CCTV reviews, found no evidence of the alleged car scratching incident.
Amidst the chaos and fear this incident has sparked, the Ministry of Public Health and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration have deployed teams to provide emotional support to the affected community. The injured are being considered for treatment at government hospitals to ensure continued assistance and minimize costs.
