Bangkok: The Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) has urged the government to disclose comprehensive information regarding the recent tariff negotiations led by former US President Donald Trump. The party is specifically seeking clarity on the 19% import tax imposed by the United States and whether any goods are being granted a 0% tax rate, which could adversely affect Thai farmers.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaimongkol Chairob, a Member of Parliament for Sakon Nakhon from the Palang Pracharath Party, highlighted concerns over the 19% import tax that Thailand is subjected to by the United States. He noted that this rate aligns with that of other ASEAN countries, excluding Laos and Burma, and emphasized the potential long-term economic implications for Thailand. Mr. Chaimongkol expressed the party’s desire to understand the rationale behind this tax rate.
General Prawit Wongsuwan, the leader of the Palang Pracharath Party, has emphasized that the tariff negotiations should not involve national security matters. He criticized the government for its lack of transparency and demanded a detailed disclosure of the items subject to a zero-percent tax rate by the US, as this could significantly impact the agricultural sector in Thailand. The party believes that such transparency is crucial to prevent potential negative effects on Thai farmers.
Mr. Chaimongkol further insisted that the government should immediately inform the public about the impacts of the zero-percent rate and outline possible solutions. He highlighted the legal requirement for the government to present the matter to Parliament within 60 days for discussion. He urged the government to prioritize transparency and consider the broader impact on citizens’ well-being, rather than focusing on preserving its power.
He questioned the current state of government transparency, suggesting that the 19% rate should not be considered a government success but rather a result of negotiations involving Trump and regional leaders. He criticized the government’s handling of the situation and urged for clarity on the zero-percent import tax’s impact on households. Mr. Chaimongkol warned against administrative complacency and urged the government to focus on the nation’s and its people’s interests.
