Bangkok: Security and foreign affairs expert Panithan Wattanayagorn has advised the government of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to conduct weekly assessments of Cambodia’s sincerity, despite a recent five-point agreement aimed at fostering peace along the Thai-Cambodian border.
According to Thai News Agency, the recommendation comes after the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, which saw positive developments including Cambodia’s agreement to withdraw heavy weapons, engage in demining activities, combat scams, and manage the Ban Nong Chan area. Additionally, there was consideration of opening a new border checkpoint, though Panithan cautioned against unwarranted optimism.
Panithan addressed the appointment of Deputy Defense Minister General Nattapol Nakphanit as Minister of Defense, highlighting two perspectives on the matter. The first is the continuity in resolving the Thai-Cambodian conflict, and the second is Cambodia’s potential advantage given General Nattapol’s familiarity with the ongoing situation, having been involved in efforts during the recent conflict. Despite the positive response from Cambodia at the GBC meeting, Panithan emphasized the need for continuous vigilance and regular evaluation to ensure lasting peace.
