Papua BIN head dies of heart attack while dining out

Refuting media reports, the management of Horison Hotel, Sentani, said that Papua’s State Intelligence Agency (BIN) head, Maj.Gen.Abdul Harris Napoleon, did not suffer a heart attack at its restaurant on Monday afternoon.

At the time he suffered the heart attack, Napoleon was at the Horeg Restaurant, which is located on Hawaii Road in Sentani sub-district, Jayapura district, Horison Hotel spokesperson Ratu Patimasang told ANTARA on Tuesday.

Horison Hotel’s general manager, Hartanto, met Horeg Restaurant’s supervisor, identified as Nedi, who showed him the VIP room where Napoleon reportedly suffered the heart attack, she said.

Thus, the heart attack did not occur at the Horex Hotel Sentani as reported earlier by media, she said.

Earlier, head of operational support at the BIN-Papua Office, Colonel Rahmat Puji Susetyo, had said that he was with Napoleon when he reportedly suffered the heart attack.

The senior agent was rushed to Dian Harapan Hospital in Waena and was confirmed to have breathed his last at 6:12 p.m. local time, he informed.

His coffin was flown to Jakarta on Tuesday morning, he added.

According to Susetyo, Napoleon headed the BIN-Papua Office twice.

Napoleon was replaced by Maj.Gen.I Gusti Putu Danny Karya Nugraha, but was reassigned as head of BIN-Papua following Nugraha’s death last year, he elaborated.

On April 25, 2021, Papuan separatist terrorists operating in Beoga sub-district, Puncak district, Papua, ambushed BIN head Nugraha while he was visiting Dambet village.

Nugraha, who was accompanied by seven security personnel, was shot in the ensuing gunfight with the armed rebels.

His death will never make intelligence officers and security personnel back down from fighting armed separatist and terrorist groups, BIN’s deputy VII Wawan Hari Purwanto asserted.

The fall of the BIN-Papua Office head while on duty has demonstrated the sacrifice made by Indonesian intelligence officers in defending Indonesia’s sovereignty, he reiterated.

“This incident has also become a symbol of BIN’s services in enforcing laws as a frontliner in the national security system,” he said.

Nugraha was laid to rest at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on April 27, 2021, but his noble fight for defending Indonesia’s sovereignty in Papua must go on, he added.
