Bangkok: The People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) announced its decision to conclude the protest near Chamai Maruchet Bridge, returning the area to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The PDRC clarified that the decision was not due to governmental pressure but in recognition of the nation’s current period of mourning.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pichit Chaimongkol, a core leader of the PDRC, and Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, held a joint press conference. Mr. Pichit highlighted the PDRC’s activities over the past 270 days, which included monitoring government work and advocating for national sovereignty and justice. The PDRC’s efforts included scrutinizing government policies, such as the investigation of casinos and the protection of national sovereignty, which led to the formation of the United Front for the Protection of Sovereignty group.
Mr. Suchart, representing the government, engaged in discussions with the PDRC, resulting in the decision to end the protests at Chamai Maruchet Bridge. The PDRC had already seen some of their proposals implemented by the government, including the rejection of casinos and online gambling and concerns over constitutional amendments involving the monarchy. The PDRC also called for the repeal of MOU 43 44, expressing distrust toward Cambodia and emphasizing the need for vigilance.
The PDRC also urged the government to repeal the Financial Business Central Act, which they believe could enable money laundering similar to situations in Cambodia. Concerns were also raised about 99-year land leases with foreigners, referencing difficulties in reclaiming such lands.
The PDRC remains committed to monitoring and investigating the situation, despite ending the protest. The area previously occupied by the protest will undergo demolition and cleaning in the coming days. Mr. Suchart expressed gratitude to the PDRC leaders and protesters for their cooperation and noted that the current national mourning period requires unity.
Mr. Suchart assured that the government’s demands align with the PDRC’s and reiterated his commitment to fulfilling promises made. Meanwhile, Mr. Prasarn Mrukpitak clarified that ending the protests was not influenced by foreign pressure but was a mutual decision in light of the nation’s significant loss, requiring collective mourning and unity.
