Pheu Thai Confirms Chaikasem as Sole Prime Ministerial Candidate

Bangkok: Surawong insists the Cabinet will not discuss the dissolution of parliament, reaffirming that Pheu Thai’s candidate remains Chaikasem.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sorawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports and Secretary-General of the Pheu Thai Party, addressed the media following a Cabinet meeting. He confirmed that the meeting adhered to its regular agenda, which included appointing a spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office. Mr. Jirayu Huangsap will continue in his role, and there was no discussion regarding the dissolution of Parliament.

Further, Mr. Sorawong highlighted that the Pheu Thai Party’s meeting today would cover political issues, particularly concerning the party’s prime ministerial candidate. He mentioned that the opinions of party members would be considered, as there are varying perspectives among MPs.

Mr. Sorawong disclosed that both Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, and Mr. Chaikasem Nitisiri, the party’s prime ministerial candidate, are scheduled to attend the meeting. Clarifying earlier statements by Mr. Chaikasem about not being contacted by the party, Mr. Sorawong stated that there had been ongoing coordination and discussions. He affirmed that Mr. Chaikasem would be the sole nominee for the prime ministerial position.

Reiterating the party’s stance, Mr. Sorawong emphasized that Pheu Thai has no alternative candidates, urging observers to await the outcomes of today’s meeting to gauge the party members’ views.
